Restoration of wood utility poles is possible with Timberbond

Doug Reeves
Wood utility poles have a surprisingly long lifespan. However, since wood is prone to decay and takes a battering during prolonged exposure to the elements, these poles need regular maintenance and repair.

There are times when wooden utility poles appear to have deteriorated beyond the point of repair. While the slow rot caused by exposure to the weather can easily be arrested and reversed, keeping a pole in service becomes much more difficult when it has experienced more severe and rapid damage. Holes left by woodpeckers, or the extensive internal degradation caused by termites, can leave utility companies thinking there is no hope for their poles. However, it is possible, with the right product, such as Timberbond, to restore even badly damaged poles to full health.

How long is a wood utility pole supposed to last?

With proper maintenance, utility poles can last for between 30 and 40 years. Assuming that the poles are properly treated and that maintenance crews keep up a rigorous care schedule, a pole can easily stay in service for this length of time, and possibly even a little longer. However, in those instances where insect or bird attacks have seriously compromised the pole, drastic remedial action needs to be taken to extend its lifespan.
